ASL Interpreters
Freelance Sign Language Interpreters are required to meet the following criteria in order to join the Deaf & Hear Alberta roster:
- Show proof of graduation from an AVLIC recognized Interpreter Training Program (ITP) or ASL/English Interpreter Education Program (AEIP)
- Show proof of successful completion of the AVLIC Written Test of Knowledge (WTK) or hold a cuurent AVLIC Certificate of Interpretation (COI).
- Pass one of the following:
- Deaf & Hear Alberta Interpreter screening test,
- Ontario Interpreting Service (OIS) Screening Test,
- AVLIC Certificate of Interpretation (COI), or
- Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf CI/CT.
- Submit at least three letters of reference from Deaf clients, Interpreters, employers or professors who are familiar with your skills as a Sign Language Interpreter.
- Show proof of “Active Membership” in good standing of AVLIC.
- Submit a Criminal Record Check as required.
- Submit an Alberta Children’s Services Intervention Record Check (Child Welfare) as required.
- Demonstrate interpreting ability as requested.
Deaf Interpreters
Deaf Interpreters are required to meet the following criteria in order to join the Deaf & Hear Alberta roster.
- Must be Deaf and have a strong ability to communicate in ASL, non-standard/gestural language forms and English thus matching the register of both the hearing Sign Language Interpreter and Deaf client.
- Show proof of membership in a Deaf organization.
- Submit at least four letters of reference, two (2) from Deaf Community Members and two (2) from Roster/Community Interpreters who are familiar with your skills as a Deaf Interpreter.
- Show proof of “Active Membership” in good standing of AVLIC.
- Submit a Criminal Record Check as required.
- Submit an Alberta Children’s Services Intervention Record Check (Child Welfare) as required.
- Demonstrate interpreting ability as requested.
- Recommended:
- Show proof of successful completion of introductory level coursed offered by Sign Language Instructors of Canada (SLIC).
- Show proof of graduation from an AVLIC recognized Interpreter Training Program (ITP) or equivalency as determined by Deaf & Hear Alberta.
